Update: 09 December 4.35pm EST
Cam Newton has suffered two fractures in his lower back from an auto accident earlier today.
“Further testing revealed that Cam Newton has two transverse process fractures in his lower back and no further internal injuries,” the Panthers said in a statement earlier today.
Tony Romo, QB for the Dallas Cowboys, had the same injury and that caused him to miss one game. However, the Panthers only have three games remaining on their schedule. With Cam missing at least one game and most likely more, the Panthers’ playoff chances just got a lot smaller.

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton was injured in a car accident this afternoon (Dec. 9). Apparently, it was a two-car accident.
The Panthers released a statement saying, “We are closely monitoring the situation of a car wreck involving Cam Newton. We will have more information at an appropriate time.”
Newton did not suffer any life-threatening injuries. He was in pain but conscious when transported to the hospital, a source told Ed Werder from ESPN.
