DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Lions have signed Matt Prater to a one-year deal in their latest effort to fix their early kicking woes.

The former Broncos kicker was released earlier this season after failing the substance abuse policy. Last season the kicker made 25 of 26 field goals.

Detroit Lions coach Jim Caldwell announced Monday (Oct. 6) that kicker Alex Henery had been released.

Henery missed 3 field goals for the Lions in a 17-14 loss to the Buffalo Bills.

The Lions have had trouble finding a solid starting kicker for this season. Prior to the short stint with Henery, kicker Nate Freese was released after going 3-for-7.

After the game Sunday, Henery said:

“I blame myself. As a man, I stand up. I’m the one kicking the ball. As the kicker, I’ve got to make those kicks. I’m not looking to blame anyone else.”

Henery was 1-for-5 with the Lions.
