Green Bay Packers Obsessed with Settlers of Catan

They may be players, but it looks like they’re gamers, too.

An article published in the Wall Street Journal this week revealed the surprising obsession of the Green Bay Packers: the strategic board game Settlers of Catan.

The game consists of a changeable honeycomb grid of land tiles, each with a harvestable resource that players try and monopolize. During game play, the objective is to continuously build settlements, cities, and highways in order to capitalize on what the ‘island’ of Catan has to offer.

At first were like, ‘What the hell is this? Brick? Wool? What kind of game is this?’ But that quickly faded. – starting center Corey Linsley

Admittedly a nerdy, strategy-heavy game, it’s pretty funny to picture the Packers squeezed around a table for some brick harvesting, road building, and robber moving. According to the article, starting tackle David Bakhtiari introduced the game to his teammates, but now they’re all competitive fans, eager for the next game night. “We are completely addicted to it,” said tight end Justin Perillo, “We play it whenever we can.”

Looks like the game is helping to relax the Packers, who are 13-4 so far this season. They take on the Seattle Seahawks this Sunday (Jan. 18) for the NFC Championship.
