Late last year super model Gisele Bündchen posted a picture of herself breast feeding her youngest child and critics went wild with praise for the devotion of the new mothers. However, earlier this month, Miami Dolphins linebacker Philip Wheeler was forced to come to the aid and defense of his girlfriend and mother of his child after she posted a picture of herself breast feeding their young son. Critics claimed that model Ashley Nicole had no business posting such a “graphic” picture on the public image sharing site Instagram.
Others claimed that the picture was offensive, should be removed, and that it was degrading. Wheeler leaped to the defense of his girlfriend and baby’s mother saying that Gisele did the same thing and garnered praise, why was his girlfriend any different. Supermodel Ashley Nicole posted the picture of her young son latched to her breast with the caption, “’Was on the way out the door but then mommy duty called… Everything stops for him! #breastisbest #natureisbeautiful’”. The picture contained no pornographic content and showed only a mother and son sharing an intimate moment inside their home.
Wheeler went to the press asking people to just leave it alone and stop worrying about the picture. Nicole says that she has no plans to remove the photo as it is not offensive and people have the option to not look at it. Wheeler went on to say that Nicole is a model, she takes pictures for a living, and that he sees no reason why the photo should be seen any differently. The photo has since garnered both praise for those that support the mother’s right to breast feed and those that feel the photo should be removed.
The only real way to determine if the image is offensive is to take a look for yourself. Some of the negative comments include things like breast feeding women should stop congratulating themselves, and others criticized the fact that Nicole decided to go public with the image even though it was taken in the privacy of her own home. Still others praised the model for taking the time to stop everything to feed and care for her son. There are going to be plenty more controversial breast feeding pics to come and it depends wholly on the individual viewing the picture to decide if they are tasteful and beautiful, or crass and unnecessary.
