The NFL has made history after reportedly hiring Sarah Thomas as a full-time referee, and will start this coming season.
Thomas will be the NFL’s first full-time on-field woman official, a barrier that the NFL has planned to break for years.
However, this isn’t the first time that Thomas has already broken the gender barrier in the football world. Thomas was the first female ref to work an NCAA football game, which was back in 2007. Also, Thomas will not be the first female ref in the NFL. Shannon Eastin worked as a replacement ref in 2012. Then in 2009, Thomas made history by becoming the first woman to officiate a college football bowl game.
As for the NFL, Thomas has been officiating training camps with NFL teams for the past several years.
Many might believe that hiring Thomas full-time is a publicity stunt, something to help resolve the issue of domestic violence against women that is so evident amongst NFL players, but the NFL has been wanting to hire a female official for years.
