The last team to change their NFL team name was the Tennessee Titans starting at the beginning of their season in 1999. Owner, Bud Adams appointed an advisory committee to decide on a new name that reflected power, strength, leadership and other heroic qualities. He was changed the team name from the ‘Tennessee Oilers’ to “coincide with the opening of their new stadium and to better connect with Nashville“, but also declared that the new name would retain the ‘Oilers’ heritage, including their team records.
ChangetheMascot.org is releasing a commercial on Tuesday (June 10) night during the 3rd game of the 2014 NBA Playoffs, where the Miami Heat and the San Antonio Spurs will be battling off. The commercial brings attention to native American tribes and closes with a statement that is directed at the Washington Redskins’ team and their controversial mascot and logo:
“Native Americans call themselves many things. The one thing they don’t …’ before flashing a picture of a Redskins helmet and pointing viewers to ChangeTheMascot.org.”
This commercial makes a great point. It will be the first time ever that an NFL team was forced to change their team name. It has been a long time coming for the Redskins, the question is what should they call themselves next?
Be sure to watch the commercial above.
