A Kenyan woman running in the 2015 Austin Marathon finished third place after collapsing on the final stretch and subsequently crawling on all fours to the finish line.
Hyvon Ngetich, 29, was leading the 26.2 mile marathon most of the time. However, on the last mile her body gave out. Refusing to get into the wheelchair that was brought to her, Ngetich slowly dragged herself to the finish, nurses by her side.
After the elite runner finished, Austin Marathon race director John Conley told her:
“You ran the bravest race and crawled the bravest crawl I have ever seen in my life. You have earned much honor, and I am going to adjust your prize money, so you get the same prize money you would have gotten if you were second.”
Sounds fair to us!
The winner of the marathon won the women’s in 2:54:22. Ngetich’s personal record in the marathon is 2:34:42.
Ngetich is still recovering and is in good shape, but what is more impressive is that the runner said that she will be back to “win” the 2016 Austin Marathon.
Better luck next year Ngetich!
