Everett Golson Announces Transfer From Notre Dame to Florida State
In an announcement that has been a few weeks in the making, Everett Golson will transfer to Florida State and will compete to earn the starting job to replace former FSU QB Jameis Winston. Golson graduated from Notre Dame on Sunday, which allows him to play in the upcoming season.
Golson will be the favorite to replace the controversial Jameis Winston as Sean Maguire is the only quarterback on FSU’s depth chart with game experience. There are also three freshman: John Franklin, J.J. Cosentino, and De’Andre Johnson.
While he is not the lightning rod or as a dynamic playmaker as Jameis Winston, Golson’s career at Notre Dame has been anything but smooth. In 2012 he supplanted the incumbent starter, Tommy Rees, and lead Notre Dame to an undefeated regular season and a BCS National Championship berth. However, he would miss the 2013 season due an academic suspension for cheating on a test.
Golson returned the 2014 season and garnered Heisman attention as he lead Notre Dame to a 6-0 start. However, the wheels came off after losing against Florida State and Jameis Winston on a controversial call and would finish the season 8-5. Golson was eventually supplanted by Malik Zaire as the starter and fell further behind him this spring practice, after which he announced his intention to transfer.
